Job Title: Project Officer, Marine
Department: Programs and Advocacy

Description

Job Purpose:
We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Marine Project Officer to support the implementation of our marine project and other core functions of our marine programme portfolio.
Roles and Responsibilities
1. Develop and Implement Marine Conservation Strategies:
• Design and execute marine conservation programs and projects that align with the
organization’s goals.
• Ensure that all strategies are evidence-based, scientifically sound, and tailored to address specific marine conservation challenges.
2. Conduct Marine Research and Assessments:
• Perform research and field assessments to monitor marine biodiversity, ecosystems, and habitats.
• Identify and document threats to marine environments, such as overfishing, pollution, and habitat degradation.
• Utilize research findings to guide conservation planning and policy recommendations.   

3. Stakeholder Engagement and Community Outreach:
• Build and maintain strong relationships with local communities, marine conservationexperts, and stakeholders.
• Conduct outreach programs to raise awareness about marine conservation issues and involve communities in conservation efforts.
• Facilitate workshops, training, and capacity-building sessions for local stakeholders to foster sustainable marine practices.
4. Advocate for Marine Conservation Policies:
• Engage with government agencies, policymakers, and NGOs to advocate for the
establishment and enforcement of marine-friendly policies.
• Promote the creation and expansion of marine protected areas (MPAs) and sustainable fishing practices.
• Represent the organization in national and regional forums on marine conservation.
5. Fundraising and Resource Mobilization:
• Identify and pursue funding opportunities to support marine conservation projects.
• Prepare grant proposals, project budgets, and financial reports to secure and manage resources effectively.

6. Monitor and Evaluate Marine Conservation Initiatives: 

  • Develop and implement monitoring and evaluation frameworks to track the impact of
    conservation projects.
  • Regularly assess project outcomes and adjust strategies as necessary to ensure
    effectiveness.
  • Prepare detailed progress reports for internal use and for submission to donors and other stakeholders.   

7. Capacity Building and Training:
 Develop and deliver training programs to build the capacity of staff, community members, and partners on marine conservation issues.
• Provide technical support and guidance to project teams and partners.

8. Collaboration and Partnership Development:
• Collaborate with national and international organizations, research institutions, and other partners to strengthen marine conservation efforts.
• Explore and establish partnerships that enhance the organization's marine conservation objectives.

9. Representation and Advocacy:
• Represent the organization at seminars, conferences, and workshops focused on marine conservation.
• Advocate for marine conservation priorities in various platforms and contribute to public awareness campaigns.

Education

Bachelor’s degree in Marine Biology, Marine Conservation, Marine Ecology, Oceanography,
Environmental Science, or a related field. Masters will be an added advantage.

More Details on Experience

  • At least three years of progressive professional experience in marine conservation or related fields.
    • Experience in policy analysis and advocacy in Marine sector and climate change at local, national and international levels
    • Proven experience in coordinating working groups or forums and participating in nationallevel climate change discourses.
    • Strong project management skills with expertise in reporting, monitoring, and evaluation.
