Across Kenya, many people are carrying stress, loneliness, relationship challenges, financial pressure, grief, family issues, workplace problems, and private struggles they do not feel safe sharing with people around them. Ajala exists to give them a safe, anonymous space to open up without fear of judgment.

As a Professional Listener, you will be part of a new movement that helps people feel heard, supported, and less alone. 

This is not just a job. It is a chance to use your empathy, patience, and communication skills to make a real difference.

About Ajala

Ajala is a private and anonymous calling and messaging platform created by Mindful Kenya and Thalia Psychotherapy to help people speak freely, safely, and confidentially. Through Ajala, callers can talk to trained listeners when they need someone to hear them out, support them emotionally, or help them process everyday life challenges.

Ajala is designed for people who want to open up without being judged, exposed, or misunderstood.

Description

What You Will Do

As an Ajala Professional Listener, you will:

  • Listen to callers with patience, respect, and empathy.
  • Create a safe, non-judgmental space for people to express themselves. 
  • Support people dealing with stress, loneliness, anxiety, grief, relationship issues, family pressure, workplace challenges, financial worries, and everyday life struggles.
  • Follow Ajala’s confidentiality, safety, and escalation procedures.
  • Identify cases that may need referral to Mindful Kenya’s professional mental health team.
  • Maintain professionalism, emotional maturity, and clear boundaries at all times.
  • Participate in training and quality monitoring to ensure callers receive safe and helpful support.

Education

  • We are looking for people who are naturally good listeners. You may be a counselor, psychology graduate, social worker, teacher, nurse, community health worker, chaplain, coach, HR professional, peer supporter, or simply someone with strong emotional intelligence and a deep desire to help others.

More Details on Experience

  • Experience in counseling, psychology, social work, healthcare, education, community work, call centers, coaching, pastoral care, or customer support will be an added advantage.

You Are a Good Fit If You:

  • Are patient, calm, and emotionally mature.
  • Can listen without interrupting, judging, advising too quickly, or dismissing someone’s feelings.
  • Communicate clearly in English, Kiswahili, Sheng, or local languages.
  • Understand confidentiality and personal boundaries.
  • Are comfortable using phone-based or online communication tools.
  • Can handle sensitive conversations with care.
  • Are willing to undergo training, assessment, and supervision. 
  • Have a strong sense of responsibility and professionalism.
