Reports To; Lead Production, under the Head of Department

Salary guide: KES 35,000 – 40,000 gross per month

JOB PURPOSE

To ensure the smooth, seamless and error-free flow of product from the machine through to the packing section, in full and on time (FTR). The Operator manages a working shift end to end: operating and maintaining the packing machine to established SOPs, supervising the team assigned to that shift, and ensuring every product produced meets both quality and quantity requirements as per dispatch procedures and work instructions.

Description

Production & Machine Operation

  • Maintain operational readiness of packaging lines, including proper equipment startup and shutdown procedures.
  • Oversee machine operations, ensuring correct packaging of products into boxes and proper palletisation.
  • Monitor material flow into machinery and verify proper functioning before commencing production.
  • Perform equipment changeovers as required, using hand tools for efficient setup.
  • Ensure sufficient stock of raw materials (laminates, cartons, trays, ink, additives, cello tape) for uninterrupted operation.
  • Verify products are produced properly as per the production plan, and liaise with the departmental head on production plan availability.

Quality & Compliance

  • Uphold quality standards in line with company regulations; complete inspection sheets accurately and report any quality defects or concerns promptly.
  • Conduct visual inspections of packaging materials, ensuring proper product usage and correct coding on laminates and cartons.
  • Ensure products produced are clean and of good quality, meeting customer expectations.
  • Working with Quality Assurance, ensure trucks are clean before loading with finished products.

Team & Shift Management

  • Manage a working shift end to end, including providing and demonstrating task instructions to the team.
  • Allocate general workers to respective production lines and give clear instructions to produce quality goods that meet specification.
  • Keep attendance records and measure key performance indicators (KPIs) for the shift.
  • Ensure the time allocated for targeted production is maintained or improved, and that production deadlines are met.

Maintenance, Safety & Housekeeping

  • Execute preventative maintenance tasks, keep equipment clean and free of debris, and assist maintenance personnel with repairs as needed.
  • Adhere to safety guidelines, including safe machine operation, safe lifting practices, and safe handling of chemicals.
  • Ensure complete cleanliness and sanitation of packaging equipment and the surrounding area, preparing the line for the next day's operations.
  • Ensure the work environment is kept safe, secure and healthy at all times.

Reporting & Other Duties

  • Complete and update information forms and logbooks accurately; maintain accurate daily and monthly records of work done.
  • Report any occurrences, mishaps, or process/machine faults in the department promptly for correction.
  • Fulfil responsibilities across designated packaging areas and perform relief duties when necessary, including palletizing, offloading raw materials, loading finished goods, stock takes, and beverage operations as assigned.
  • Participate in Mission Oriented Agile Teams on relevant projects.

Education

  • Certificate, Diploma or Degree in Chemical, Food science, Electrical, Mechanical, or a related technical/production field

More Details on Experience

  • 1 – 3 years in a plant or machine operation role, FMCG environment preferred; prior leadership experience an advantage
