Summary
A leading paint manufacturing company is seeking to recruit a Health & Safety Officer to develop, implement, and oversee the company’s Environment, Health & Safety (EHS) programs across its operations. The role will ensure compliance with occupational health, safety and environmental legislation while promoting a strong safety culture and minimizing workplace risks.
The successful candidate will be responsible for conducting risk assessments and workplace inspections, investigating incidents and accidents, coordinating EHS training, ensuring proper use of PPE, managing hazardous substances, supporting emergency preparedness, and overseeing contractor safety. The role will also coordinate with relevant regulatory bodies and support the implementation and continuous improvement of ISO 45001 and ISO 14001 standards.
The position will work closely with manufacturing, warehousing, maintenance, utilities and fleet teams to ensure that health, safety and environmental standards are consistently maintained across the organization.

Description
The EHS Officer is responsible for developing and leading the company’s Environment, Health, and Safety strategy across all manufacturing facilities, storage and distribution units. This role ensures regulatory compliance, drives a strong safety culture, mitigates operational and environmental risks, and establishes robust safety and environmental standards to protect employees, assets, facilities, and supply chains across all sites.
The position ensures consistent implementation of corporate EHS standards across offices, and manufacturing plants that contain operations such as blending lines, mechanical presses/stamping, paint production (solvent and water based), powder mixing lines, workshop and maintenance operations, warehouses, utilities, and fleet operations.
Key responsibilities;
- Carry out risk assessments and consider how risks could be reduced.
- Outline safe operational procedures which identify and consider all relevant hazards.
- Carry out regular site inspections to check policies and procedures are being properly implemented.
- Ensure working practices are safe and comply with legislation.
- Prepare health and safety strategies and develop internal policy.
- Lead in-house training with managers and employees about health and safety issues and risks.
- Keep records of inspection findings and produce reports that suggest improvements.
- Record incidents and accidents and produce statistics.
- Keep up to date with new legislation and maintain a working knowledge of all OSH legislation and any developments that affect the employer's industry.
- Produce management reports, newsletters and bulletins.
- Ensure equipment is installed safely.
- Manage and organize the safe disposal of hazardous substances.
- Advise on a range of specialist areas, e.g. fire regulations, hazardous substances, noise, safeguarding machinery and occupational diseases.
- Lead investigations into incidents and accidents, conduct root cause analysis and ensure corrective and preventive actions are implemented and tracked to closure.
- Maintain and update Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and the hazardous chemical inventory register in line with the demands of paint manufacturing operations.
- Develop and coordinate emergency preparedness and response plans, including fire drills, evacuation procedures and first aid arrangements.
- Liaise with regulatory bodies (DOSHS, NEMA, County Government and the Fire Department) on inspections, licensing and statutory compliance.
- Manage contractor and third-party safety compliance across company sites.
- Champion the implementation and continuous improvement of ISO 45001 (Occupational Health & Safety) and ISO 14001 (Environmental Management) systems.
- Supervise, coach and develop EHS team members and build a strong safety culture across the organization.
- Oversee PPE provisioning, usage and compliance across the organization.

Education
- Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Science, Engineering Degree, Occupational Health and Safety or a related field.
- NEBOSH International General Certificate or a National Diploma in Occupational Safety and Health is an added advantage.
- Membership with a recognized professional body, e.g. Work Place Safety Professional Association of Kenya (WSPAK) is an added advantage.
- Certification in First Aid and Fire Safety/Firefighting.
- ISO 45001/14001 Lead Auditor certification is an added advantage
